Quick answer: pickleball is similar to tennis in that both are net-and-court sports, but it is not just tennis on a smaller court. Pickleball uses a paddle, a plastic perforated ball, an underarm-style serve, a two-bounce rule and a non-volley zone. Tennis uses a strung racket, felt ball, larger court and overarm serve.

Pickleball vs tennis at a glance
| Feature | Pickleball | Tennis |
|---|---|---|
| Equipment | Solid paddle and plastic perforated ball | Strung racket and felt tennis ball |
| Court | Smaller court, often compared with a badminton doubles court | Larger court with singles and doubles lines |
| Serve | Underarm-style rules and diagonal service court | Overarm serve, with first and second serves |
| Net play | Non-volley zone restricts volleys close to the net | No kitchen; net play depends on positioning and volley skill |
| Beginner feel | Easier to rally early | Steeper early technical curve, especially serving |
| Workout | Can be moderate to vigorous depending on pace | Often higher intensity because of court coverage and movement demand |
Is pickleball basically tennis?
No. Pickleball borrows the familiar idea of hitting a ball over a net, but the rules change the game quickly.
The biggest differences are the serve, the two-bounce rule and the kitchen. In pickleball, the receiving team must let the serve bounce, then the serving team must let the return bounce before volleys are allowed. The non-volley zone then stops players from standing on top of the net and smashing everything downwards.

Is pickleball harder than tennis?
For most beginners, pickleball is easier to start. The court is smaller, the serve is less intimidating and doubles rallies can get going quickly.
Tennis usually has the harder first technical hurdle because the overarm serve, longer court and faster movement ask more from a new player. That said, good pickleball is not soft tennis with less running. The kitchen, dinks, resets and fast hand exchanges can become very tactical.
Why do people play pickleball instead of tennis?
- It is easier to start without a strong tennis serve.
- Doubles games feel social and accessible.
- The smaller court can suit mixed ages and abilities.
- The rules create long, tactical rallies without needing huge groundstrokes.
That does not mean tennis is being replaced. Some players prefer tennis for the athletic movement, serve variety and bigger court. Others prefer pickleball because it gives them a fun game sooner. Neither court is short of opinions.
Which is more physically demanding?
Tennis is often more physically demanding because the court is larger, the ball is faster and players cover more ground. In the Apple Heart and Movement Study update, tennis workouts averaged a higher peak heart rate and more time in moderate-to-vigorous heart-rate zones than pickleball, while pickleball workouts lasted slightly longer.
Pickleball can still be a proper workout. A peer-reviewed study in older recreational players found singles and doubles pickleball reached moderate-to-vigorous intensity by heart-rate measures. Session intensity depends on the players, format, pace and breaks, so this article should not promise a universal calorie burn.
Is pickleball similar to badminton?
Pickleball shares some court-size comparisons with badminton, but it is not the same sport. The net height, equipment, ball, serve and rally patterns are different.
The useful beginner shortcut is this: pickleball has the easy-to-start feel of a compact court sport, the net-and-rally shape of tennis and its own kitchen rule that changes everything near the net.
What kit do beginners need?
For tennis, you need a tennis racket and tennis balls. For pickleball, you need a pickleball paddle and pickleballs. They are not interchangeable.
If you are a tennis player trying pickleball, start with control and comfort rather than chasing power. Browse pickleball paddles when you are ready for your own kit. If grip comfort matters, compare racket overgrips with pickleball-specific feel in mind.

What if you are choosing between tennis, pickleball and padel?
If tennis feels too technical at first, pickleball may give you quicker rallies. If you like doubles tactics and wall rebounds, padel may be the better experiment. The existing guide on how padel is different from tennis helps with that wider choice.

FAQs
Is pickleball easier than tennis?
Usually, yes for beginners. Pickleball has a smaller court and a less demanding serve, so many new players can rally sooner than in tennis.
Can tennis players play pickleball?
Yes. Tennis players often adapt quickly, but they still need to learn the kitchen, two-bounce rule and softer shot choices.
Does pickleball use a tennis racket?
No. Pickleball uses a solid paddle. Tennis uses a strung racket.
Is pickleball a good workout?
It can be. Pickleball intensity depends on singles or doubles, rally pace, session length and player fitness. It should not be presented as the same workout for everyone.
Which burns more calories, tennis or pickleball?
There is no single universal answer. Tennis often has higher movement demand, while pickleball sessions can last longer. Body size, intensity and breaks all matter.
Why do older players like pickleball?
Many players like the smaller court, social doubles format and lower barrier to starting. That does not make it risk-free, so players should match the pace to their fitness and mobility.
